Delhi Capitals Wicketkeeper Porel Sent to Judicial Custody in Rape Case
The 23-year-old cricketer's bail plea was rejected by a West Bengal court as the investigation continues.
Abishek Porel, the Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter, will remain in judicial custody for 14 days after a Chinsurah court denied him bail on Friday. The decision came as his three-day police remand concluded, with the court ordering further detention while the probe into the allegations against him proceeds. Porel was arrested earlier this week following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, which had intervened after concerns were raised about the investigation's progress.
The case stems from a complaint filed by a medical student at Mogra Police Station in June. She alleges that Porel, whom she had been in a relationship with for three and a half years, established a physical relationship on the promise of marriage. She also accuses him of physical and mental abuse, threats, and misuse of private photographs and videos. Porel, who also represents Bengal in domestic cricket, has denied all allegations.
Importantly, the legal proceedings are still in their early stages, and no conviction has been made. The denial of bail reflects the court's assessment of the current investigation rather than a verdict on guilt. As the case unfolds, Porel's participation in upcoming cricket seasons, including the IPL, remains uncertain.
