With Kieron Pollard now installed as head coach, Mumbai Indians must decide between a familiar veteran and a 23-year-old rising face for their next leader.

Mumbai Indians' search for a new captain has widened, with Tilak Varma reportedly joining Rohit Sharma as a serious contender for the role. The franchise first reshaped its coaching staff, replacing Mahela Jayawardene with Kieron Pollard, before turning its attention to who will lead the side.

According to reports, owner Akash Ambani, Pollard and senior official Rahul Sanghvi will settle the question. Rohit offers a low-risk option given his vast experience, and he is entering the last year of the current cycle ahead of the next mega-auction, making a return possible after his much-debated removal in 2024. Tilak's case rests on his rapid rise: at just 23, he has already served as India's T20I vice-captain.

Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah, both of whom have filled in as stand-in skippers, are said to be out of the running. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya's position appears increasingly fragile, with trade speculation refusing to fade. His move from Gujarat Titans was followed by 10th and 9th place finishes in 2024 and 2026 respectively, and only a narrow playoff entry in 2025, while his sudden appointment as captain angered sections of the fanbase. Sources suggest his exit could be close, though the decision may not rest with him.
