South Africa's decision to omit Dewald Brevis from the ODI squad for the Australia series sparked debate, but coach Shukri Conrad insists it is part of a wider rotation strategy. With a three-match series against Australia looming in late September, the Proteas are treating it as a key test for their 2027 World Cup preparation, leading to a preference for a full-strength side.
Conrad addressed the uproar by clarifying that Brevis has not been dropped from future plans. He pointed to intense competition for middle-order spots, with Matthew Breetzke, Tristan Stubbs, and David Miller currently ahead in the pecking order. The coach emphasized that Brevis will get his opportunity in the Bangladesh series, alongside other fringe players, to ensure everyone receives a fair evaluation.
Looking further ahead, Conrad revealed that the England series in January 2027 will serve as the final audition for a shadow World Cup squad. He stressed that before that, South Africa have six ODIs to assess candidates, and Brevis remains firmly under consideration. The door, he insists, is far from closed.
