Sri Lanka Fights ICC Decision to Move Women's Champions Trophy

Sri Lanka Cricket has challenged the ICC's decision to strip the island nation of hosting rights for the inaugural Women's Champions Trophy, originally scheduled for February 2027. The global governing body moved the event due to concerns over political interference in SLC's operations, and new hosts will be announced at the ICC board meeting in October.

Interim committee chairman Eran Wickremaratna has made it clear that Sri Lanka will not back down. He stated that the board is committed to correcting its foundational issues and will take all necessary steps to address ICC's concerns. Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara, also part of the interim committee, stressed the importance of rebuilding a stronger working relationship with the ICC while the board works on a new constitution.

The controversy stems from the government-appointed Transformation Committee, which was set up after Sri Lanka co-hosted the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup. The ICC views governmental interference as a breach of its governance rules, prompting the transfer of the women's event. Despite the setback, SLC remains determined to fight for the tournament's return to Sri Lanka.
