Mike Hesson Named Pakistan Test Coach, Sarfaraz and Gul Sidelined
The former white-ball coach takes charge of the red-ball side for the rest of the WTC 2025-27 cycle after Pakistan's series loss in England.
Pakistan have made a major overhaul to their coaching staff following a disappointing Test series in England. Mike Hesson has been appointed as the head coach for the remainder of the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, replacing Sarfaraz Ahmed, who was in the role for just four months. Bowling coach Umar Gul has also been removed from his position, though both will continue traveling with the squad.
Hesson, who was serving as Pakistan's white-ball coach, is set to join the team in Birmingham ahead of the third Test against England starting September 9. His immediate assignment will cover upcoming WTC matches in Sri Lanka and New Zealand. The changes come after Pakistan lost the first two Tests in England, with the team's only win under Sarfaraz coming against West Indies in January.
Under Sarfaraz's guidance, Pakistan played six Tests, suffering five losses and managing a single victory. The PCB's decision reflects a broader shake-up, as reports also indicate potential changes to the playing squad. Hesson now faces the challenge of turning around the team's fortunes in the ongoing WTC cycle.
