Ex-South Africa Captain Dean Elgar to Bow Out After County Season
The veteran opener, who led the Proteas in Tests, will retire from all professional cricket following Essex's final County Championship fixture in September 2026.
Dean Elgar has announced that he will bring down the curtain on a distinguished 21-year playing career when Essex finish their 2026 County Championship campaign. The former South Africa skipper, who has been with the English county this season, will say goodbye to the game after their last match, against Glamorgan on September 24.
Elgar, who turns 39, had already stepped away from international cricket in January 2024 after a reported fallout with the team management and a dwindling Test schedule. His last appearance for the Proteas was against India in Cape Town, and he had not played an ODI since 2018.
Explaining his decision, Elgar said his age and a desire to spend more time with his growing family were the primary factors, not any external pressure. He expressed pride in having captained South Africa and in exceeding expectations, as few had predicted he would enjoy such a lengthy career. Essex still have games remaining, including a clash with Surrey starting August 27, before Elgar officially calls time.
