Veteran Sri Lankan Coach Dies After Clash With Young Cricketers

Sumith Fernando, a well-known Sri Lankan cricket coach, passed away on Tuesday in Colombo, days after a physical confrontation with a group of young players. The 62-year-old was hospitalised following the incident on Saturday and succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, with his funeral held on Thursday.

Fernando, who had mentored current Sri Lanka ODI skipper Kusal Mendis during his school days at Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa, was also the curator at Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club. The altercation reportedly began after players objected to a lack of running water at the facility. Fernando stepped in to defuse the situation but was attacked by two individuals, one of whom was a 17-year-old.

The teenager has since been arrested by Colombo Police and placed in child probation custody. Fernando's death comes just ahead of Sri Lanka's first Test against India, leaving the cricketing community in mourning over the loss of a dedicated developer of young talent.
