Shakib Al Hasan Ready to Return and Face Murder Charges
The exiled Bangladesh all-rounder says he will come home if the government guarantees his safety, and hopes for a farewell series.
After nearly two years away from Bangladesh, cricketer and former lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan says he is prepared to return and meet murder allegations linked to the 2024 student-led protests. He fled the country after the government was overthrown, and has since been living overseas.
In a recent interview, Shakib expressed his willingness to come back and face legal proceedings, but only if the government assures his security. He maintains his innocence and is ready to fight the charges. The veteran all-rounder also wants to play a farewell international series before retiring, acknowledging that time is running out for his long career.
Shakib revealed that an earlier attempt to return in late 2024 was abandoned mid-flight, and a later effort was blocked after he posted a birthday message for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. He remains hopeful that the right moment to go home will come soon.
