Dasgupta: India Must Drop WTC Final Chase for Now
Former keeper urges focus on rebuilding Test side rather than short-term qualification.
Deep Dasgupta has advised Team India to put aside their immediate target of reaching the WTC 2027 final. The former wicketkeeper believes the squad, now led by Shubman Gill, is in a rebuilding phase and needs time to grow. He made these comments ahead of India's two-Test tour of Sri Lanka, which starts in Galle on August 15.
India currently sit fifth in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 48.15, following a home series defeat to South Africa. With challenging away fixtures against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia on the horizon, qualification looks increasingly difficult. Dasgupta argued that chasing this goal could push the management into making short-sighted decisions, rather than investing in long-term development.
