Brook’s Time Not Yet: Key Explains Test Captaincy Snub

ECB’s Rob Key says Harry Brook still needs to develop before taking on England’s top job.

Rob Key has clarified why Harry Brook was passed over for the England Test captaincy, with Joe Root reclaiming the role. Speaking after Stephen Fleming was confirmed as head coach, Key admitted that Brook is not ready for the demands of leading the Test side.

Key stressed that Brook continues to evolve as both a player and a leader. He believes the responsibility of captaining England in red-ball cricket is immense and that Brook will benefit from more time to mature. Root, on the other hand, brings experience and a proven record, making him the ideal choice to partner with Fleming.

The ECB still sees Brook as a future captain, encouraging him to gain leadership experience with the white-ball teams. Key is confident that Brook will eventually step up, but for now, the timing favours Root.
