Zimbabwe's Evans Admits Intent to Deny Sooryavanshi Maiden Ton
Zimbabwe all-rounder Brad Evans explains why he put in extra effort to catch Vaibhav Sooryavanshi short of a century in the third T20I.
Brad Evans, the Zimbabwe all-rounder, revealed that he deliberately prevented India's Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from scoring his maiden international hundred in the third T20I in Harare. Sooryavanshi, who had already smashed two IPL centuries at just 15, was caught by Evans at long-off for 81 off 49 balls.
Speaking during the mid-innings show, Evans praised the young batter's talent but admitted he did not want to see a 15-year-old reach a triple-figure score against his team. "He is a big player and will do amazing things, but I didn't want him to get his first hundred against Zimbabwe, so I put in extra effort," Evans said.
Sooryavanshi, the top scorer in the series, was on course to become the youngest international centurion, surpassing Shahid Afridi's record of 16 years and 217 days. Evans' effort ensured that the historic moment was denied, leaving the prodigy stranded at 81.
