The Pakistan fast bowler was left out of a Kandy Royals match against Colombo Caps at the last minute, despite being told he would play as an impact player. According to reports, the team's coach apologized mid-innings, blaming an analyst's oversight for not submitting Afridi's name as the designated impact player.
Afridi was reportedly furious and considered returning to Pakistan immediately. However, franchise officials and tournament organizers apologized and convinced him to stay. He formally lodged a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Unit and also brought the matter to the match referee's attention.
The incident adds to the controversies surrounding LPL 2026, which earlier saw former Jaffna Kings co-owner Manjot Kalra arrested over alleged match-fixing links. The impact player rule, borrowed from the IPL, allows teams to substitute specialists as needed, but the mishandling in Afridi's case has raised concerns about professionalism and integrity in the league.
