Jaffna Kings Ownership Revoked Over Financial Breach

Sri Lanka terminates defending champions' ownership mid-season after Sports Commune fails to meet obligations.

The Innovation Production Group (IPG), which holds the rights to the Lanka Premier League (LPL) and works with Sri Lanka Cricket, has ended its franchise agreement with Sports Commune, the owner of the Jaffna Kings. The decision came during the 2026 LPL season, just two months after Sports Commune took over the defending champions.

IPG cited the franchise's inability to fulfill financial obligations under the agreement. Reports indicate sponsorship funds were not distributed, forcing players to cover sponsor logos with black tape. As a result, IPG and Sri Lanka Cricket have taken full operational control of the team for the remainder of the season, though the squad and schedule remain unchanged.

Co-owner and former India U19 cricketer Manjot Kalra was arrested by Sri Lanka Police's Special Investigation Unit on alleged match-fixing offenses related to the LPL. He has been remanded until July 31. Kalra denies the charges, claiming no involvement in any wrongdoing.
