Virat Kohli has long been regarded as one of the finest ODI batters, known for masterfully pacing innings. But recently, he has introduced a new dimension to his game, shedding his cautious early approach for one that prioritises aggression. This shift, evident since the 2023 South Africa series, sees Kohli seizing the initiative from the very first deliveries he faces.

The statistics reveal a remarkable change. In the first 15 balls of his innings, Kohli now strikes at 93.69, with a boundary every 6.93 deliveries, compared to a strike rate of 67.31 and a boundary every 10.6 balls previously. His dot-ball percentage has dropped from around 70% to just under 55%. Moreover, the proportion of attacking shots in this phase has jumped from 37.82% to 51.35%, with those shots yielding a strike rate of 138.60β€”up from 120.34.

The recent match against England in Cardiff was a perfect example. On a tricky surface, Kohli walked in early after a wicket and immediately took on quick bowler Gus Atkinson, striking three boundaries in his first 15 balls. Instead of playing himself in, he showed that his new default is to dictate terms, embodying a selfless, proactive version that India needed in ODIs.
