The decision comes as part of a long-term strategy by the Gautam Gambhir-led management, which wants to groom younger openers like Yashasvi Jaiswal alongside Shubman Gill. Rohit's recent failures in the first two ODIs against England have not helped his cause, giving the selectors a reason to phase him out. The 37-year-old is reportedly unhappy with the development and may opt for retirement rather than being dropped.
Rohit had expressed his desire to continue in ODIs and had spoken to BCCI officials before the series.
