Ravichandran Ashwin Emerges as Frontrunner for England Test Coach Role
The former Indian all-rounder is reportedly in discussions with the ECB to replace Brendon McCullum, who was dismissed as Test coach but retained for white-ball sides.
Ravichandran Ashwin has emerged as a leading candidate to take over as head coach of the England Test team, according to reports. The 39-year-old Indian spin legend is said to have held talks with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in recent days, following the dismissal of Brendon McCullum from the Test role. McCullum, who was sacked on July 12, will continue to serve as England's white-ball coach.
Ashwin, who recently traveled to the United States to play in Major League Cricket for the San Francisco Unicorns, is believed to have met with ECB officials during his stay. Despite lacking formal coaching experience at the international level, Ashwin is widely regarded for his tactical acumen and cricketing intelligence. He has mentored players at his academy in Chennai and was recently named captain and mentor of the Dublin Guardians franchise for the upcoming European T20 Premier League.
The ECB's interest in Ashwin underscores his reputation as one of the game's sharpest minds. While his coaching credentials are minimal, his deep understanding of the sport and ability to strategize could make him an effective leader for England's Test side. The board has not yet confirmed any appointment, but Ashwin's name is at the top of their shortlist.
