Indian captain Shreyas Iyer has declined to guarantee a debut for teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the upcoming five-match T20I series against England. The comments come after the 15-year-old, who won the orange cap in IPL 2026, was left out of the playing XI in the recent Ireland T20Is.

Iyer justified the decision by emphasising the need to support senior players who were instrumental in India's T20 World Cup 2026 triumph. "It's not that only one individual has performed; others have too. Those who won us the World Cup are main pillars and deserve backing for their experience," he told reporters.

The team's strategy backfired in Ireland, where India lost the two-match series 0-2 without fielding Sooryavanshi. However, Iyer remained firm, indicating that the youngster may have to wait longer for his international debut despite his impressive IPL form.
