Sundar's T20I All-Rounder Role Fails to Deliver

Despite being backed as a spin-bowling all-rounder, Washington Sundar's contributions in T20Is have been minimal in both batting and bowling.

Washington Sundar has been a regular in India's T20I setup under Gautam Gambhir, but his performances in the format have raised questions about his utility. The all-rounder, who has shown promise in Tests, has struggled to make an impact in T20Is, where his role seems increasingly redundant.

Since 2025, Sundar has featured in nine T20Is but bowled only 14.2 overs across seven innings, completing his quota just twice. He has been wicketless in five of those innings and conceded at over nine runs per over. Even his IPL record with Gujarat Titans is poor—three wickets in 20 overs at an economy of 9.75, often bowling only when the main options are rested.

His batting has been equally underwhelming. Sundar has faced 87 balls in six innings since 2025, averaging 22.60 with a strike rate of 129.88. All his innings have come at No.5 or lower, and he has rarely been trusted to play a substantial knock. This limited usage in both departments casts doubt on his value as an all-rounder in the shortest format.
