Shreyas Iyer became the fourth Indian captain to lose his first T20I in charge after India fell to a 34-run defeat against Ireland in Belfast. The hosts posted 182/9, with Lorcan Tucker and Gareth Delany leading the charge, while India were bowled out for 148, despite a quickfire 49 from Abhishek Sharma.

The previous Indian captain to suffer this setback was Shubman Gill, who lost his debut T20I as captain against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2024. After restricting Zimbabwe to 115/9, India collapsed to 102 all out, with Gill scoring 31. Iyer joins an unwanted list that includes only two other Indian skippers who have lost on their T20I captaincy debut.
