The incident occurred when Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson went out to celebrate the win and reportedly missed a curfew. An altercation in a VIP area allegedly involved a rugby player, and an ECB security staff member was struck by a punch meant for Atkinson. Despite neither player starting the fight, both were dropped for the second Test. McCullum noted that Stokes kept himself in shape during his absence, playing for Durham, and expressed excitement about his return.
New Zealand bounced back emphatically in the second Test, with Matt Henry taking 11 wickets to lead a 253-run rout. With the series tied, Stokes's leadership and form will be crucial for England as they aim to clinch the series on home soil.
