Shubman Gill has been in sublime form against spin in the ongoing Afghanistan series, striking at 134.86 and finding the boundary every 5.45 deliveries. His method involves lunging forward to good-length balls, a tactic that sets him apart from most modern batters. For instance, in Lucknow, he drove a skiddy delivery from Allah Ghazanfar through mid-off, timing it perfectly despite having faced just two deliveries earlier.

Gill's forward play is backed by impressive stats: he has played 81.13% of deliveries pitched between 4 and 6 metres from the front foot or by advancing down the track, scoring at a strike rate of 126.19 with 85.71% control. This is significantly higher than teammates Rohit Sharma (69.23%) and Shreyas Iyer (64.28%). Only Afghanistan's Sediqullah Atal comes close at 73.07%.

This approach helps Gill dictate terms. In Dharamshala, he stepped out to Mohammad Nabi and drove him down the ground, forcing Nabi to shorten his length later in the over. Gill then rocked back and pulled the shorter ball for another boundary. Even Rashid Khan struggled to find the ideal length in Lucknow, constantly adjusting as Gill's forward movement disrupted his plans.
