Iyer, the designated vice-captain, stepped in to lead the side as Afghanistan began their chase. The development comes shortly after Iyer was appointed India's T20I captain for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, replacing Suryakumar Yadav in the shortest format.
India posted a formidable 402 all out, powered by Gill's heroics and a 125 from Ishan Kishan, who ended a three-year ODI century drought. The pair added 224 runs for the third wicket in just 141 balls, putting Afghanistan under relentless pressure.
